Who We Are

A Restaurant Built
on Passion & Purpose

Great Barrier Bites was founded in 2008 by Marcus and Elena Webb — a couple who fell in love with Queensland's coastline during a reef diving expedition.

What started as a small beachside grill has grown into one of Cairns' most celebrated dining destinations, recognised three times as Queensland's Best Seafood Restaurant.

How We Got Here

2008
The Beginning
Marcus and Elena open a 30-seat beachside grill after years working in Brisbane's top kitchens.
2012
First Award
Named Queensland's Best Seafood Restaurant by the Good Food Guide. Expanded to 80 seats and added a full wine bar.
2016
Reef Partnership
Signed a sustainability partnership with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority — a first for any private restaurant.
2020
Through the Storm
Navigated the global pandemic with a pivot to premium takeaway. Retained every single staff member. Our guests rallied behind us.
2024
Third Award + New Chef
Third consecutive Queensland Restaurant Award. Executive chef Jamie Torres joins from Sydney's Quay restaurant.
2026
Today
Welcoming 18,000+ guests per year. Still owned by the same family. Still obsessed with the reef.
